Mustang/Muktinath Trek- 10 Days

Trip Introduction

Mustang-Muktinath Trek
Experience the stark, barren landscapes of Mustang Muktinath Trek dotted with Tibetan Buddhist cultural attractions on treks around Jomsom. Altitudes on this trek are not too high, and flying between Pokhara and Jomsom speeds up the journey. This is an ideal trip for trekkers who don’t have much time or who would rather not do a very strenuous trek. Mustang Muktinath Trek is the classic trek in the ancient trading way to Tibet of the Kali Gandaki valley and the gateway of the secret treasure of Nepal Mustang.
Mustang Muktinath Trek lies in the trans-Himalayan region of Annapurna. The trekking trail follows ancient salt trading and pilgrimage route to Mustang Muktinath. The trekking unveils Nepal’s spectacular diversity of landscape, culture, and ecology. The region of Mustang Muktinath was part of the Mustang Kingdom for a long time in history. Hence it possesses ruins of ancient forts, caves, and monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism as well as a pre-Buddhist Bon religion. The area gets very little rain making it the best place to trek in Nepal during monsoon rain.

Day 04: Flight to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni (2800m), Duration: 2-3 Hrs
We take a scenic flight to Jomsom in the early morning and it takes 25 minutes to touch down at the airport. While we are on a flight, it brings us close to the mountains of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range. And after we reach Jomsom, we will take our hot breakfast and then we begin our trek to Kagbeni for two hours along the Kaligandaki gorge. We do a trek with the wind, the terrain and it becomes much more barren and the breeze increases. The wide trail along the western side of the sandy, saligram-filled riverbed provides views of the nearby peaks of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and Nilgiri, and to the south Annapurna Massif.
Kagbeni, spectacularly situated atop a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and the Jhong Khola rivers, is the last village in Lower Mustang and guards the entrance into Upper Mustang (visible across the Kali Gandaki riverbed). It is an oasis of green fields amidst rocky, arid mountains, with Nilgiri looming beyond. We will stay overnight in a local lodge at Kagbeni.

Day 05: Trek from Kagbeni to Jharkot (3519m) via red Gompa, Duration: 4-5 Hrs
From Kagbeni, the trail leads on to the Kaligandaki plains in the rainy season. The road diverts to the right bank of the river plain, & the walk is pleasant with few ups and downs the most. From Kagbeni to Jharkot is approximately 4-5 hours walking, depending on how you are feeling in the dry air and the altitude.
It’s an uphill trek from Kagbeni to Jharkot and you will gain quite a bit of elevation, so it’s nice to stop here and take the afternoon to explore this old fortified village. The main feature of the village is the striking red Gompa (monastery) of the Shakya sect of Buddhism that sits prominently at the front of the village. This Gompa is more than 500 years old and has an active Tibetan Medicine school. There are stunning views down the valley and up towards the famous Thorong La (pass) which is the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. We will stay overnight in a local lodge at Jharkot.

Day 06: Trek from Jharkot to Muktinath (3800m), Duration: 5-6 Hrs
Today, after breakfast we will start our trail. Muktinath is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhist and Hindus, and a great example of a sacred place shared in harmony by followers of two religions. Local Buddhist nuns (belonging to the lineage of Lama Wangyal) care takes the site. Every year, thousands of devotees from India, Tibet, and Nepal come here on pilgrimage for purification and salvation. It is said that throughout history many kings throughout Asia did the same.
It’s well worth spending a day here to not only visit this sacred shrine but also to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We will stay overnight in a local lodge at Muktinath.

Day 07: Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom (2743m) via Lupra, Duration: 4-5 Hrs
You will descend to Jomsom via Lupra village, visiting a local Bonpo Monastery. While you have to ascend the mountain again for a short way to get back the trail, it is a great route that trekkers on the Annapurna circuit miss out on, so you will be far away from the crowds and the jeep trail to Jharkot and Muktinath.
Bonpo is an ancient pre-Buddhist religion not represented by many monasteries these days, so it is a rare and special chance to learn about this ancient animist religion while taking a stunning alternate route back to Jomsom. We will stay overnight in a local lodge at Jomsom.
