Mt. Lhotse Expedition with Labuche Peak Climbing

Trip Introduction

Mt. Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the world. The mountain lies in the Everest region of Nepal along the Nepal-China border and is part of the Mahalangur range of Himalayas. Lhotse in the Tibetan language means the “South Peak” as it is the southern extension of Mt. Everest. Lhotse has two subsidiary peaks, namely Lhotse Shar (8383m) and Lhotse Middle (8414m). The summits of the two mountains Everest and Lhotse are connected by the South Cole, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000 meters. It is considered an independent mountain. It was first climbed by a Swiss team led by F. Luchsinger & E. Reiss in 1956 by following the Everest South Cole route following the yellow band. Since then all of the Lhotse peaks have been climbed.
An impressive ring of three peaks makes up the Lhotse massif. The face of Lhotse is one of the largest mountain faces in the world we attempt to climb the normal route to the tallest peak of the Lhotse massif. Lhotse Base camp is located beside the Khumbu Glacier, same as Everest Base Camp as well as closed to Island Peak.
Lhotse is technically a very difficult mountain to climb. Climbers often have to face strong blizzards, steep ridges, and icy temperatures, especially near the top. However, the most formidable aspect of climbing Lhotse is overcoming the Lhotse face or the western CWM. Lhotse face is a wall of glacial blue ice that is 1125 tall with steep pitches and deep bulges. Perfect foot timing, ice climbing, and fixing ropes will be needed to counter this difficult section.
During the Lhotse summit, you will have the most rewarding experience of watching the highest Himalayas in the world including Everest, Nuptse, Lobuche, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, Nirekha, and many more.

Note: Please contact us for further details. We have a team if highly experienced Sherpas who have climbed Lhotse multiple times and equally experienced and tactful high altitude porters. They will provide you full support in your dream to climb on fo the most stunning mountain in the world.

The voyage begins from day 11 and ends at day 48 which tentatively is of 36 days trek. The trek is a complete adventure full of challenges while at the same time on trek we can enjoy the unforgettable serene beauty of nature. Within 36 days we continuously walk and rest at our tent in the evening. A tent we eat dry foods packed for the voyage and again the early morning if weather is supportive we start our trek and finally with long and tiring walk we reach a peak of 8516m. And cheer up the victory and slowly return back to our base camp on the 48th day we reach the camp and finally sleep a night at the lower, however, the journey of 36 days is full of risk but it actually is a triumph in human life. There will be a total of four Campus set up on the ascent to the summit as follows:
Included: Bed, Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Camp I (5900m/19357ft.)
Camp I is situated on at the altitude of 5900 m. on the top of Khumbu icefall. The camp I is a desolate and exposed place mainly used as a rest and transition location on the way to camp II. The glacier between Camp I and Camp II flattens but there are still large crevasses close to Camp I, which are also fixed with ladders.
Camp I is situated in a rather flat area and we will be acclimatizing here for a few days. However, this region has a deep fissure below and is surrounded by mountain walls; glacial areas through which we will trek to reach Camp II. The crevasses beneath us, on one hand, creates a deep murmuring sound especially audible at night time but on the other hand, the mountain walls provide a warm sensation because of the sun’s reflection on the walls. Camp I is also an intermediate camp until Camp II (Advance Base Camp) is established. Trekking to Camp II, we will climb through a much gentler slope of the Western Cwm (pronounced “coom”)

Camp II (6400m/20998ft.)
Camp II is located at 6400m above the sea level in a lateral moraine at the bottom of the south ridge. It is a very safe and sheltered location with tremendous views on Lhotse but sometimes the dark clouds from the lower Himalayan valleys create not so favorable weather. Excessive wind, gale can sometimes cause trouble like destroying the tents. Camp II will consist of large tents for cooking and dining and several smaller tents for sleeping. It will be our base whiles Sherpa’s place safe accommodation at Camp III and IV.  After acclimatizing here for a few days, we move ahead towards Camp III, while we acclimatize here i.e. at Camp II, the guides and the Sherpa climbers will be busy establishing stable higher camps and stocking them with bottled oxygen and other gears required. Sherpa will ensure that all the supplies are in place to scale Camp IV and ultimately the summit!
At Camp II all companies set-up their main climbing camp for the duration of the climbing period with tents for individual climbers, the kitchen, and dining tents. Camp II is the main acclimatization camp and the base for Camp III acclimatization climb and the final summit attempt. First Venture: our first venture into the mountain is now complete and we will be heading back to the Base Camp.

Camp III (7100m23294ft.)
Camp III is located on a southeast ridge on the Lhotse wall. Many climbers find difficulty in Camp III because of the high altitude. Many climbers feel the effects of high altitude like dizziness, headaches. So we rest there and let our body to adjust the climate and surroundings.
One has to cross the glacier to the right side before 40 degrees 600m climb on the compact snowfield. The route is safe with a couple of shorts less than 3m ice cliffs, which climbing Sherpas set up with fixed ropes.
For the well-being of the mountaineers, proper acclimatization at Camp II is crucial to a successful scaling of Camp III. Also, oxygen will be used starting this point. Camp III is adjoined to Mount Lhotse wall. Next, a one day- climb up the Lhotse Face will complete our second venture as we return to the Base Camp. The second venture entails following the first venture route and schedule. In addition to this, the second venture also involves a challenging one day- climb up the Mount Lhotse Face and back to the Base Camp. Third venture: the third venture entails following the second venture route and schedule. In addition to this, it also involves sleeping one night at Camp III for acclimatization purposes before returning to base camp again for a rest period. Returning to the base camp we look forward to enjoying the rest days. Some of the expedition team members might choose to descend to a lower elevation to recover before starting the summit attempts while others may choose to remain at the Base Camp. Depending on variables like the team member’s opinion, events of the season, either of the option can work well and will be fully supported by the Swagat Holiday Treks & Expedition Team.

Camp IV (7900m/25918ft.)
Camp IV is a flat area with loose rocks and with Lhotse on the south. The climb is very steep and the rise ranges from 40-45 degrees. It is the last camp before we climb the summit. The Lhotse camp IV is located at an altitude of 7900m. It is located near South Col. It is easily accessible by the majority of climbers without supplementary oxygen. There are two rock sections to navigate before Camp IV; yellow Bands, interlayer marble, phyletic and semi-schist rocks, and Geneva Spur, an anvil-shaped rib of black rocks; they are again set-up with fixed ropes by Climbing Sherpas.
We will be climbing Mount Lhotse Wall by using fixed ropes and equipment amid ferocious and violent winds. As we move forward, we must ascend through the steep bends. This region has plenty of losing, down – slopping and risky limestone that may cause slipping and falling, hence one must be careful and alert at every step. After crossing a short snowfield, the route moves ahead up to the Geneva Spur on the east as we aim to finish climbing through the flats of the South Col/saddle/pass. We will efficiently do so with the support and exceptional skills of our expert Sherpa’s. Camp IV is the last major Camp before climbers make their summit push. It is the first perilous night of an adrenaline-packed adventure. This is also the final and most dangerous part of climbing. Scaling the Lhotse from Camp IV provides a podium where climbers can rest. Mountaineers then proceed to the Cornice Traverse. At this point, the lack of oxygen and extremely cold temperature clouds a climbers ‘reflex, judgment, decision skills making the most challenging elements of the climb!

Day of Ascent/Victory (8516m/27940ft.), Duration: 11-16 Hrs
The day of the Ascend is decided by the team leader, Usually, the team leader sees the temperature, humidity, wind, and rain from Camp IV, and if everything is stable, the team heads for the summit overnight (usually 11:00 am to 02:00 am)depending on above situations, reach the summit by morning 9-10 am and then return back to Camp.
On the summit day, we will start early morning and attempt to reach the summit before mid-day. Now, the final moments to reach the summit, near the top of the world, you will observe examination and scientific equipment, prayer flags, and mementos left by climbers. From the entire 7.5 billion people living on planet Earth, only a handful of blessed and privileged people like you can witness such a scene! Remember, you were the chosen ones on the divine Lhotse as you take one small step after another, you can see a breathtaking view of the majestic Himalayas beneath you. What a glorifying experience, a memory to last a lifetime and beyond. On top of the snow glistening Lhotse most climbers Thank God, remember their loved ones, tale some emotional pictures, and absorb a very rare 360-degree view of the world. The fear along with the adrenaline rush lingers on …..As the list of death attests, getting down safely is as dangerous as climbing up. We will slowly and safely retreat to the South Col and next day descend to Camp II and then to Camp I.
The victory to the Lhotse from South face completes here and you share your victory of ascending over Lhotse after reaching Base Camp.

Day 50: Cleanliness program in Lhotse base camp to Pheriche, Duration: 6 Hrs
When all team members at Base Camp for final re-grouping, include guides and staff, to assist packing equipment and checking each member's health condition after the great climb of a lifetime experience. We will clear the mess that we have created at the base camp as we believe in eco-friendly and responsible tourism. And we start packing all climbing gears and disposing of garbage in proper sites, where SPCC (Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee) will check the camp and depositing the litter to take away from the base camp to dispose sites or back to Kathmandu. Then, we will start to retrace our steps back on the same trail that descends gradually through Hinku Valley. We will continue trek until we reach to Pheriche. We will descend to the village of Pheriche. The trek will be naturally faster as we will be trekking downhill. We will have an elevation change of almost 1000m.
